Biography

Julian de Hoog received the B.Sc in Computer Science and Mathematics from McGill University in Montreal, Canada, and the M.Sc and PhD degrees (both in Computer Science) from the University of Oxford, UK.  He is currently a Research Fellow in the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

At the University of Melbourne, Julian is involved in a Linkage Grant project examining "The Impact of the Mass Adoption of Electric Vehicles on the Australian Electricity Grid".  His roles include development of a suitable simulation framework for accurately simulating distribution networks; development of smart charging strategies for electric vehicles that alleviate this impact;  and examining how renewable generation can be used towards electric vehicle charging.  As part of this, Julian has been involved in the Victoria Electric Vehicle trial, working together with partners in industry and government.

Julian has also previously worked in robotics and his PhD thesis proposed a novel exploration method for teams of robots exploring unknown areas (e.g. in search-and-rescue scenarios).
