Accelerating the Implementation of Operating Envelopes Across Australia

Distribution companies (known as Distribution Network Service Providers (DNSPs) across Australia are gearing up to offer customers flexible connection agreements known as operating envelopes (or dynamic operating envelopes) as an alternative to orchestrate the bidirectional flows from Distributed Energy Resources (DERs, from solar PV to batteries to electric vehicles and future vehicle-to-grid) whilst ensuring the integrity of the poles and wires.

Summary

This project will, ultimately, provide key metrics, recommendations, and guidance for DNSPs in Australia and AEMO (the Australian system operator) to assist them in improving and, hence, accelerating, the use of Operating Envelopes (OEs) across Australia.

This project will 1) assess the implications of large-scale OE calculations in terms of accuracy, necessary algorithmic adaptations, and computational requirements, 2) provide guidance on data-driven techniques that can enhance their electrical modelling processes, and 3) provide guidance on forecasting techniques for OEs.

This 1-year project (June 2023 to May 2024) is funded by CSIRO and the Global Power System Transformation Consortium (G-PST).
