Operating envelopes are time-varying export or import limits calculated by distribution companies (who manage the poles and wires), in real-time or in advance, at the connection point of the customer (where the meter is). They allow distribution companies to ensure network integrity without having direct control of DERs or aggregators. This, in turn, makes better use of existing infrastructure and increases the efficiency of the overall electricity value chain.

As Australian distribution companies enter their new regulatory periods over the next 5 years, operating envelopes offer vast potential to accelerate the adoption of more solar PV, batteries, electric vehicles, and even the provision of services through aggregators. However, implementing them in practice can be challenging, ranging from data requirements (accurate LV models, smart meter data, forecasts, etc.) to socioeconomic considerations (fairness, consumer acceptance, market design, etc.).

The ARENA-funded Project EDGE has successfully demonstrated the ‘Gold Standard’ approach to operating envelopes which is enabled by full LV network visibility and fully validated LV network models.

Join AEMO's Nick Regan, AusNet's Anoop Nambiar, and researchers from The University of Melbourne, Prof Nando Ochoa, Prof Pierluigi Mancarella, and Dr Michael Liu, as they present their journey to make operating envelopes a reality for AusNet (a distribution company servicing 1.5 million Victorians) as part of the Project EDGE trials. This webinar will share key insights into meter-level operating envelopes (from algorithm design to implementation considerations) and LV model validation as well as the analysis of trial results. The success of Project EDGE signifies that it is possible for industry to adopt the Gold Standard operating envelope. It also serves as a benchmark for distribution companies worldwide seeking to trial different operating envelope approaches.
